• Tonight, from 7pm, we’ll have our usual Open Meeting.
• Saturday, from 2pm to 5pm, the TriEmbed folks are having their monthly hack afternoon.
• Sunday, from 6pm, we’ll have Software Project Night.

This week Splatspace turns 3!

We were officially an organization on Sept 8th, 2010, and moved into our current location on Sept 11, 2010, so whichever date you might count from, this is our birthday week.

The last year has been huge. We’ve really stepped up our participation in local events, through the public school system, the library system, and other events. We’ve grown our collection of tools in the space, most notably with the addition of our newest 3D printer. And our membership and the larger community has expanded hugely.

More than that, the maker culture of the Triangle has exploded this year. When Splatspace started, we routinely had to explain to new people the basic concept of a hacker or makerspace. Now we can frequently jump past that and directly in to the sorts of projects and people we have at the space.

All of this is amazing–and it’s because of you. Whether you’re a member of the space or part of our larger community, thanks for the support for the last three years. We look forwards to what the next year brings.

A few weekends ago, the TA3M folks threw an ownCloud installfest at the space. It was a pretty big success.

ownCloud is a a free and open source cloud service solution, providing a variety of services like those found with dropbox or google’s web offerings. It’s designed to be a service you control, deployed on your own hardware.

The TA3M members at the installfest helped get it installed on a variety of hardware, including Raspberry Pis and a mobile server running of a USB drive.

We’re excited by the stuff TA3M is doing–keep an eye on our meetup page or here for announcements of future events!

Last month, Splatspace went to the Burlington Mini-Makerfaire, a local Makerfaire thrown by our friends at the Alamance Makers Guild.

We had an assortment of projects done by members at the faire.

Joe Divers brought his Sharebot, a Raspberry Pi powered photo booth based off the sharebooth, along with an assortment of props for photos.

We also had Josh Buczynski’s Paper pose-able robots, Poplocks, again, as well as a variety of papercrafts including a cardboard raygun designed by Brian Gubicza.

Peter Reintjes came and set up his PACE project, an open source evolution project, producing bacteria that create various useful proteins.

Just like last year, this was an awesome event. Our thanks to the Alamance Makers Guild for holding it!

• Tonight, Monday, from 7 to 9pm, TA3M is having their monthly local meeting. TA3M is all about technology and activism. This week they’re focusing on cloud technology that activists can trust.
• Tuesday, from 7pm, we’re having our usual Open Meeting.
• Wednesday, from 7pm, is a Personal Digital Fabrication night.
• On Saturday morning, from 10am, the TA3M guys will be hosting an ownCloud installfest.
• Saturday afternoon, from 2-5pm, TriEmbed (formerly TriArduino) will be hosting a hack afternoon.
• Closing the week on Sunday evening, from 6pm, we’ll have our usual Software Project Night.

This Saturday our friends at the Alamance Makers Guild are holding their second Mini Maker Faire. Last year’s Mini Maker Faire was a lot of fun, and we expect this one will be too.

The Faire is at the Holly Hill Mall, from 10am to 6pm. We’ll be there showing off our usual assortment of DIY tools, fun projects, and other stuff. If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, come on out!

This past Saturday, Splatspace participated in two events: Engineer’s Day 2013 at the Museum of Life and Science, and the Jameco/Instructables Build Night at Fab Lab Carolinas.

At Engineer’s Day we showed off our 3D printer, ran a squishy circuits table, demonstrated a Raspberry Pi photo booth (based of the Sharebooth) and one of our members, Josh Buczynski, presented his “Poplocks”–papercraft, pose-able robots.

At the build night, members helped with a variety of kit projects, including a tumbling solar robot. We also helped set up LEDs on a soap box derby car.
