DIY Laptop Stickers

We recently got a new vinyl cutter at Splatspace, which has let members start making their own vinyl decals. One of our members is a huge comics fan, and used our vinyl cutter to make a new sticker from art for a not-yet released comic:

This was an easy image to turn into a decal at Splatspace. As the member explain’s:

Using Inkcut, a plugin for Inkscape, another member at Splatspace helped me create the sticker and cut it out of white vinyl. It was a pretty good sample project, because the design is super simple and blocky.

The cutter, a Roland Vinyl Cutter, actually functions as a printer; you process an image in Inkscape to reduce it to just the lines you want, and then use Inkcut to send it as a print file to the cutter. It’s a really simple process.

And here’s the final product:

Non Compliant

Interested in making your own stickers for your computer, or other decals? Come to a meeting, and learn about using the vinyl cutter!

    PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE

Following the TriLUG seminar on the BASH shell on Sept. 6, let’s gather and spend some time practicing what we learned!

This “bash bashing” is happening at Splat*Space in Durham, Sat. Aug 30 at 1pm – 4pm.

All persons are welcome to attend, and wired & wireless networking and power available.  Plenty of mentors will be around, and some small demonstrations will be presented of the material gone over at the meeting, an FAQ session will be presented, and other questions answered.  Please bring your device with bash installed — including MS-Windows boxes with cygwin installed.

Splat*Space is located at 331 W. Main Street in Downtown Durham — there is a front and back entrance. We recommend you go onto Ramseur St. and enter through the back, using the parking in the back.  Signs will be posted in the glass door of the red-brick building with cement horizontal strips and window sills (the historic Snow Building).  Splat*Space is in the basement — call for someone to let you in.

Feel free to inquire about Splat*Space and other activities there, but please be respectful of the materials and personal property in the ‘space.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Come to Software Project Night if you’re a beginner or an expert programmer: sharing your unique perspective on software is what makes Software Project Night work!

  • Saturday, from 02:00PM Triangle Embedded Computing Hack Afternoon (TriEmbed):

Triangle Embedded Computing Interest Group (TriEmbed)

It’s time again for another Hack Afternoon at SplatSpace!

What is an Arduino? What is a Raspberry Pi?  See these links for more info:

    http://arduino.cc/

    http://raspberrypi.org/

No prior experience is required to attend hack afternoon and you don’t even need to own an Arduino. There are plenty of members who will be glad to let you look over their shoulder and ask questions. Some will even hand you some parts and let you tinker. If you have your own parts, definitely bring them. We have lots of space and everyone should have room to work on a reasonably sized project.

You don’t need to be a member of SplatSpace in order to attend, but please do ask about the membership options while you’re there. It’s a great group of folks and, if you’re into embedded computing there’s a good chance that you’ll share interests with other attendees.

Go here for directions to SplatSpace: http://splatspace.org/location/

If anyone has projects they’d like to collaborate on, feel free to start a conversation on the http://mail.triembed.org/mailman/listinfo/triembed_triembed.org mailing list. This announcement has also been cross-posted to that list.
