Metal cutting in the Splatspace’s new Annex

Some time back Splatspace expanded into another room in the basement of the Snow Building. We call the new room the fabrication annex, or Annex, and it’s got some serious tools, which lets our members work on some serious projects.

Most recently, at this week’s open meeting, one of our younger members started work on making her own 3D printer. In our new space, cutting threaded rod is no problem:

Got a project that needs some serious work? Come check out the new Annex, and join our members in their fabrication efforts!

Maker culture spreads to the White House

Maker culture continues to spread.

Do you remember a few years ago the video clips of that kid and his marshmallow cannon at the White House? Well that kid, Joey “Marshmallow” Hudy, has inspired the White House to have its own MakerFaire.

Dale Dougherty, the CEO of Maker Media (think Make: Magazine) and one of the founders of MakerFaire, will be working with the White House to launch the Faire, though no one is really clear on what that’s going to look like.

Dougherty recently called 2014 the year of the maker, and is excited about the White House Faire.

“The White House thing would definitely help us celebrate the year of the maker.”

This week’s schedule (Jan 20-26)

Here’s the schedule at the space this week:

  • On Tuesday, from 7pm, we’ll have our usual Open Meeting.
  • On Saturday, from 1pm, there’s Personal Digital Fabrication Saturday3. Interested on working on a Mantis Mill, 3D printer, or other project? Come on down.
